Viseu, winter camp

Winter Camp 14-24.02 was spent near the city of Viseu, Casa de Darei palace, where, together with the Finnish club members and other athletes from different clubs spent a quality training camp. Now when I have returned home to Latvia, only then after the occurrence of relaxation, I estimate, what is obtained in this training session. Running on the dirt roads and maps matters of course, but partly also to coercion by investing in jobs and base for future seasons.

Martin's thoughts: Even before the camp 's my head flashed two ideas conflicting with each other. The first version of the plan was to train to my full potential and, in a way to build this camp as a heavy week. The second option was to train wise, putting the accent on the low end of the weekend a competition. I chose the second option, a bit of self - saving purposes. There are still days when my body reacts a little bit of mystery, which is sickness effects of the disease. But over the years I have learned to adequately respond to and cope with it ;) . At the beginning of training plan 2 times per day: Day and Night - o. I don't know, how many times I have said, that training at night is something special. If you are able to come back the next day in the same area in daylight and to evaluate the places where previously really failed, this day is a transcript of dough and relaxed "fairy tale", however, that everything is in order and all are based on the night "kneaded" is completely uncaptured info. I liked Viseu forests, as I understood the 2012th The POM competitions held here. I am fascinated by the fact that the maps are similar to Finland - rocky, rough areas, but the difference between the Portuguese regions were evident, particularly well - experienced Finns who navigate off-road difficulties were encountered. Martin's map from Middle race on 22.02.

Some conclusions after camp from our team members:

I've been thinking about the races, that was included at the end of the camp. I have learnt/ told myself to take them for what they are early on in the season and after a training camp, and that is training, good training and nothing else. I have also learnt what I should avoid when I run in rough, Portuguese terrain.

Jussi
The unfamiliar technical terrain in Portugal taught me that I had to be ready to adapt my orienteering style during the race. The Middle Distance race in particular was a good lesson that I should take more time in the beginning of the course to understand the mapping style and what are the obvious features in the terrain!

Nice to run with map in such demanding terrains after longer brake. Top quality job done by our attorneys Kari and Sundman. Rough terrains, but excellent preparation for upcoming WC event in Turkey and Scandinavia during spring time.
All info about races in 22-23.02.
POM orienteering, for our team was running Kari, Esa and Jussi!

Edgar's 5th place,
 Middle FIN champs
Finnish championship – Middle distance and Relay – one of most important events of orienteering life of Finland. Saturday 22.09, 6:20 we got up, had some breakfast and went to the race! This is important event for Finns and if a foreigner "smashes" a place in the top ten, then it is worthy! Martins: I remember myself some time ago, because once I had the opportunity to climb on the podium of the Finnish championship (best ten runners are awarded).
From TuMe there was Harri, Esa, Gleb, Jussi, Martins, Edgars, Manu, Sami, Jari - all tried to fight for place in final!
Final start list reached Martins, Edgars and Jussi. Top 8th guys gets to final in each group.

Qualification results for all guys!
Here are qualification group maps!

Jussi on the way to finish 25th place, Middle!
Martins: It was interesting that I had to start the final 2min before Edgars. The distance was mature, and that forces you to show others the performance. I can mention, that on the way to the right 1st control was ability to read the map 5m horizontal easily and did not pose particular difficulties to perceive information. But on the way before my starter control, I felt a little bit confused, I tried to compare object in the map and object in nature (the pit), where control had to be and was placed. As they say orientation film broke and could not realize, where I was. But there was no a big panic, I ran to the right, where there was a sloe and then I was back in the game, I mean on the map. But this misunderstanding costed me ~ 48sek. I was running at my own pace to the next control, of course, I wanted to make more speed, but nothing, you have to run with the one you do have. Suddenly I heard some hard gasp at control 10th, I looked back and saw Edgars. The first thought was to hold up and run physically. As you can see, he felt moving away too fast. Until the next but one control I suddenly saw Edgars, but at the last control he already disappeared at the finish line. It turns out that I was reached for 2min and he ran away from me on 35sek. Edgars got 5th place in the end . I stayed in place 22nd +4:26 behind winner. Jussi 25th +4:48 behind winner. Edgars 5th - good performance + 1:51 behind winner. Thierry was unbearable 1st place! Leonid got 2nd place and Pasi 3rd place.

TuMe FIN champs 9th
Edgars, Sami, Esa, Jussi
Esa's perfornance just
+1:23sek behind Anders Nordberg,
6th leg time!
Tume in FIN champs 9th
Edgars, Sami, Esa, Jussi. Edgars came first in 1st leg! Black horse knows what to do. Esa did just perfect performance in 3rd leg +1:23 seconds behind Anders Nordberg, 6th leg time!
Martins: I have to run in 2nd team. No more than one foreigner in Finnish team is prevented. So it happened that 3 of us were  running the first stage – Edgars, Gleb and me. I do not know why, but I just love relays, it is exciting for me, and I perceive it as a game! At the beginning of the distance I could anticipate that it will tallish step as running out. It was quite difficult in the middle and at the end had around 40m steep slopes were lifted - I almost walked.. In the distance I saw that M. Bostrom together with Edgars tried to run at a higher speed and run away  from others. But my motivator was, that  2/3 of distance I had ability to deliver a good result, no matter of all: the adversity and poor quality training process because of health! Looking at the other athletes, I have to admit Pasi, who has not at least one year running the world elite. It was the culmination of waiting - Pasi ran the last stage  3m45sek before Thierry. Would French athlete be able to win Pasi? That was the question of the day. But somehow I had confidence of his good performance - the first place, the second place Tue Lassen, and the third place remained in the well-known Frenchman. I also had confidence in my team!
Thank you all for the nice weekend!

All relay results.

Night Hawk 2013

TuMe team:
Jussi, Martins, Doug, Esa
Jouni
Gleb, Sami

I have to say Thank you in advance to team, which managed to stay in TOP 10 and even ascend to the sixth place!
Esa
Mass start with 4-night-O runners from each team, it was not seen before. The new format made this relay more interesting and exciting. As some Norwegians say, they would like to make this race as high level and popular as Jukola and 10mila. Let's see after some time, because everything of this race depends on the amount of athletes and teams participating in the 8 leg's relay.
Martin's mention:
Martins
I would like to mention that this race was held near Oslo, Sandvika. The map trace the style of me all night time long and made it clear that there something is missing or just lacking focus .. I can blame only myself for my mistakes, but somehow I could not have the right touch with the map and especially in the control area. For example, there is drawn only one hill in the map, but in the forest there are 3 hills of the same size, then I believe there something seemed to be strange. But what can I say, all runners had the same conditions. If you look at the results and their stages, 6min probably are lost somewhere.. I can say that this area was a challenge for everyone! Especially if I had just arrived from World Games in Columbia. Trifle more was the EMIT punching Touch Free system that allowed punch at control non-stop running!
Thank you guys for the wonderful weekend race, especially those who ran 2 times - Jussi, Doug!
Thanks Sundman for everything, all the preparations and pre-race actions were perfectly done as always!!!
